Check your eligibility for preventative screening

Breast and bowel cancer are two of the three most common cancers affecting Kiwi, and they're both treatable if caught early. Screening tests for both are publicly funded in Aotearoa New Zealand, but the age range for eligibility doesn't cover everyone at risk.

That's why we cover the cost (up to $300) of breast and bowel cancer screenings for MAS Life Insurance Members who are over 40, but under the age of eligibility for public funding.

Review the full eligibility requirements for these preventative screenings below, and schedule an appointment with a provider of your choice. If you meet all the eligibility criteria below, you can submit your invoice after the screening and we'll reimburse you up to $300 for the cost.

Bowel screening

Bowel screening is a test used to detect early signs of bowel cancer, often before symptoms appear. It typically involves a simple at-home test and is recommended for adults starting around age 45 to 50.

You can make a booking for a mammogram breast screening with with over 100 providers around the country. To find the location closest to you, search for "mammogram" on the HealthPoint NZ website and filter the results by location.

Why should I get tested before I'm eligible for a publicly funded test?

Health NZ offers public funding for breast and bowel cancer screenings within specified high-risk age ranges. However, the age at which screening may be recommended under clinical guidelines can be different from when publicly funded screening becomes available. Finding cancer early can make it easier to treat, which is why we promote and support early testing.

How much will you reimburse?

We will reimburse members for the cost of each bowel or breast cancer screening test that meets the eligibility requirements, to a maximum of $300.

Can I claim both offers?

Yes. If you meet the eligibility requirements for both the bowel screening test and a mammogram, you can submit an invoice to be reimbursed. You do not need to choose between these two offers if you are eligible for both.
