MAS Advisers are now carrying lifesaving equipment on the road

Our MAS Adviser vehicles are being fitted out with St John LifeBeat Mini defibrillators, putting 35 more automated external defibrillators (AEDs) into communities across Aotearoa. 

It's a practical extension of our partnership with Hato Hone St John and supports their October campaign Shocktober, to teach as many people as possible how to respond to a cardiac arrest. 

A partnership built on shared values 

We’re the proud major sponsor of the Hato Hone St John 3 Steps for Life programme, a free one-hour session that teaches people how to recognise and respond to a cardiac arrest. This includes how to call 111, start CPR and use a defibrillator.  

Over 2,000 New Zealanders are treated for a cardiac arrest in our communities each year, so having more people equipped with these skills can genuinely be the difference between life and death.  

MAS was originally founded by doctors, for doctors, so supporting the health and resilience of our communities sits right at the heart of who we are. 

Bringing the commitment to life 

Our MAS Advisers spend a significant amount of time visiting Members across the country, from busy city centres to small rural towns, which means these defibrillators will travel into places that might otherwise be a long way from lifesaving equipment. 

Our Advisers have also completed training, so they know how to use the equipment and respond calmly and confidently if it's ever needed. While we hope they never have to use it, having a defibrillator and the knowledge to use it close at hand could help save a life when every second counts. 

It's also a fitting extension of what our MAS Advisers already do best. They help Members build confidence in their financial future, and now they're equipped to help build confidence in an emergency too. 

Shocktober is coming 

Ben Jorgensen from Hato Hone St John says the timing couldn't be better because “in October we have Shocktober. This is where there is a real emphasis on learning about CPR and defibrillators…and [having] 35 defibrillators out in the community where they can do real good is fantastic.”
