For many people, saving for retirement is something they know they should do, but finding extra money to put aside can be difficult. Life is busy, and adding another financial task to the list can be easy to put off.
That’s where Feijoa comes in.
As a Member-owned mutual, MAS is here for our Members through all ages and stages of life, helping them build stronger financial futures. With $1.78 billion in KiwiSaver funds under management and $3.62 billion across our three retail investment schemes, we support Members at different points in their financial journeys.
Partnering with Feijoa is one way we’re doing this – making contributing to KiwiSaver regularly effortless by turning everyday spending into an opportunity to grow their savings.
“We know our Members are busy, and we don’t believe building financial wellbeing should mean asking them to completely change the way they live,” says Helen McDowall, MAS Chief Investment Products Officer.
“Feijoa is a great example of using an expert tool to make something that can feel difficult – saving for the future – much easier to do as part of everyday life.”
Feijoa automatically rounds up purchases to the nearest $1, $2 or $5 dollars and directs the difference into a Member’s KiwiSaver account. There’s no need to set aside a large amount at the end of the month, remember to make an additional payment or change spending habits. It simply works in the background alongside the everyday spending people are already doing.
And the difference is tangible.
Since partnering with Feijoa from 30 March 2026 to 19 October 2026, 356 MAS Members have joined Feijoa to build their KiwiSaver savings, collectively putting away $262,462 through their everyday spending. Almost 100 MAS Members have added more than $1000 to their KiwiSaver account through Feijoa, with the highest savers putting away almost $7000. On average, MAS Members so far have added $883 to their KiwiSaver account.
Merle, a MAS Member who uses Feijoa, says: “I use Feijoa and happily talk about it to anyone who'll listen, because it's a brilliantly effortless way to supercharge your investment savings with those tiny daily round-ups you never notice, without budgeting harder, planning more, or feeling the pinch. Love me some good ol' Kiwi ingenuity!”
For Feijoa co-founder Mark White-Robinson, that’s exactly the point.
“We wanted to create a simple and secure tool that removed the friction and made saving feel achievable, rather than another thing people have to think about,” says Mark. “The beauty of round-ups is that they’re small amounts, but they happen regularly. Over time, those small contributions can become something meaningful.”
The approach is particularly resonating with self-employed Members, including those in the medical community, who may not have the regular, automatic KiwiSaver contributions that come with employment. Around a third of Feijoa users are self-employed and don’t contribute to KiwiSaver through employment. For them, building a regular savings habit can be harder, making an automated approach a simple way to put money aside for the future.
For MAS, the partnership is about making financial wellbeing practical. It’s not about telling Members they need to spend less, save more or completely rethink their finances. It’s about finding expert tools that can work with people’s existing lives and help turn small everyday actions into meaningful progress.
“Financial wellbeing isn’t one-size-fits-all,” says Helen. “As a Member-owned mutual, we value being part of our Members’ lives through all ages and stages, helping them navigate their financial needs as they change over time. Part of that is giving Members access to tools and expertise that can help them make good decisions for their own circumstances. Feijoa is a simple example of that – it takes something people are already doing and helps make it work a little harder for their future.”
Sometimes, building a better financial future doesn’t require a big change. It can start with the small change left over from the things you’re already buying.
