MAS is assuring Members that its Claims team is ready to support anyone affected by this week’s severe weather events.

With heavy rain and flooding impacting communities across the country, MAS is encouraging Members to prioritise their safety and reach out early if they need assistance.

Recognising the impact this event could be having on Members, MAS’s General Insurance team sprang into action this week and prioritised calling Members who were severely impacted by the 2023 Auckland Anniversary event and were identified as potentially needing early claims support.

Member feedback shows that early contact from the Claims team has helped reduce uncertainty and allowed claims and support to be progressed sooner.

As of today, 58 claims have been lodged, with numbers expected to rise as Members regain access to holiday properties. Of these claims, 59% relate to homes, 27% to contents, 7% to cars, boats or caravans, and 7% to business property, illustrating the wide-ranging impact of this week’s severe weather across residential, vehicle and commercial assets.

Jo McCauley, Chief Executive of MAS, says the organisation is focused on being there for Members when they need it most.

“We know weather events like this can be incredibly stressful. Our Claims team are ready to support Members through the process and help them access the assistance they need as quickly as possible,” says McCauley.

“We encourage any Members who have been affected to get in touch with us as soon as possible. We’re here to guide you through your claim and answer any questions along the way.”

Making a claim

Members who need to make a claim can complete an online claim form or call MAS on 0800 800 627.

For urgent claims or where emergency repairs are required, Members are encouraged to call 0800 800 627 and select option 1.

For non-urgent claims, MAS asks Members to submit an online claim form. Claims will be triaged to ensure those with the most urgent needs are prioritised, and MAS thanks Members for their understanding during what may be a busy period.

What to do before lodging a claim

  1. Document the damage
Take clear photos and videos of any damage to your property to help speed up the assessment process.
Make a list of any perishables that must be disposed of.
Photograph, remove and discard any water or mud-damaged items that pose a health risk, such as saturated carpets and soft furnishings. If floor coverings are removed to assist drying, take photos and keep a sample to support replacement later.
  2. Gather key information
Have your policy number, proof of ownership and any relevant receipts ready, where possible.
  3. Contact MAS
Call 0800 800 627 for urgent assistance or submit an online claim for non-urgent matters.
